 A million rupees in the safe. Twelve months on the calendar. Five people a month sit down across your desk and ask you to trust them. The file in front of you says what they earn, what they owe, where they work. The person in front of you says something slightly different. Somewhere between the two is the truth, and finding it costs you time you don't have enough of. Run a credit report. Call the employer. Pull the bank history. Every check burns from a budget that resets each month and never stretches far enough to cover everyone. So you learn to spend it on the ones who feel wrong — and you learn that feeling wrong and being wrong are not the same thing. Then you decide. Approve the full amount. Offer them half at a worse rate. Send them away

WHAT YOU DO

• Read the file: Income, employment, credit score, existing debt, what the money is for
• Interview them : Five questions. Their answers are not always what the paperwork says. 
• Investigate: Eight checks ID, credit report, salary, bank history, employment, employer call, business records, and a deep dive. Ten points a month to spend on all of it, and the deep dive alone costs five
• Watch for the contradiction : Anything a check turns up that clashes with what they told you gets flagged. Not every liar leaves one
• Decide : then live with it. Approve, reduce, or reject. Approvals get counted out of the briefcase by hand
• Manage the book : Loans already out there go late, then risky, then bad. You can contact a struggling borrower or restructure them — restructuring costs you now and saves you something if it fails anyway
•  Get through the month: The branch costs Rs 30,000 to run whether you lend anything or not. Sitting on your hands is its own way of going broke
